Slab Production

Slab Production is one of the most critical stages in which travertine blocks are transformed into semi-finished products suitable for architectural projects. At Merdivenci Marble, this process begins with cutting-direction-approved blocks processed using high-precision machinery, with every step carried out under strict quality control.

Before entering slab production, travertine blocks are thoroughly analysed in terms of vein structure, colour distribution, and natural porosity density. This analysis ensures both the aesthetic integrity and technical durability of the slabs to be produced.

Converting Blocks into Slabs

The first step of slab production involves cutting selected blocks into slabs at predetermined thicknesses using multi-blade cutting machines. For Silver Travertine products, thicknesses of 2 cm and 3 cm are commonly preferred. During this stage, the following criteria are prioritised:

  • Cutting accuracy

  • Surface integrity of the slabs

  • Continuity of veining

Surface Finishing Processes

Cut slabs are processed according to the desired surface character. Merdivenci Marble offers the following surface finishes in slab production:

  • Honed: Provides a matte and natural surface appearance.

  • Polished: Highlights surface gloss and pattern depth.

  • Brushed: Creates a soft texture with a natural stone feel.

Throughout these processes, the natural texture of the slab is preserved, allowing the stone’s character to emerge without compromise.

Filled and Unfilled Options

Due to the inherent structure of travertine, natural voids and pores are present. During slab production, the following options are offered:

  • Filled: Pores are filled with special resins to achieve a smoother, more closed surface.

  • Unfilled: The natural texture of the stone is preserved for a more rustic appearance.

While filled slabs provide a more uniform surface, unfilled slabs emphasise the natural and raw character of travertine.

Back Surface Reinforcement (Epoxy Mesh)

In slab production, Merdivenci Marble applies Epoxy Mesh (Net) reinforcement, particularly for large-format and thinner slabs. This application:

  • Reduces the risk of breakage during handling and transportation

  • Increases structural strength

  • Ensures long-term durability

Epoxy mesh reinforcement is a key quality feature, especially for export and large-scale projects.

Quality Control and Preparation for Selection

Once production is complete, slabs undergo detailed quality control before entering the selection process. At this stage, the following aspects are inspected:

  • Surface integrity

  • Colour and vein consistency

  • Dimensional tolerances

This ensures accurate classification of slabs suitable for Premium, Exclusive, and Antique selections.

Slab production forms the foundation of Merdivenci Marble’s ability to deliver Silver Travertine products that offer high performance, aesthetic continuity, and technical reliability in architectural projects.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which thicknesses are preferred in slab production?

Silver Travertine slabs are generally produced in thicknesses of 2 cm and 3 cm.

Honed finishes offer a matte and natural appearance, while Polished finishes highlight surface gloss and pattern depth.

Epoxy Mesh increases the structural strength of the slab and reduces the risk of breakage, especially during handling and installation.

Filled slabs are preferred for interior applications requiring smoother surfaces, whereas unfilled slabs are used in projects where a natural and rustic appearance is desired.
